Fitness in Golf - It's Here to Stay!

The game of golf has changed for good and there is no going back.

The full impact of the "Tiger Effect" has now been registered and golfers are becoming athletes. Of the top 20 players in the official world golf ranking, 10 are 30 or below and 13 have quite obviously athletic physiques. Even the pros with slightly "rounder" figures such as Kenny Perry and Phil Mickleson are working with strength and conditioning experts to make their swings more dynamic and powerful. Players are getting stronger, fitter, leaner and more flexible and it is clearly paying dividends.

 What about my game?

All very well and good but how does this relate to your game though? After all these guys are professionals, they have all day every day to hit balls, practice their short game AND train in the gym, They have swing coaches to watch over their practice and personal trainers to guide them through their training.

Well have an honest look at your own swing, the chances are that if you are taking the time to read this article then you are interested in improving your golf game. Which means you have been to see a PGA professional and probably had your swing put on camera. After recovering from that particularly traumatic event (it can be scary, I know from experience!) you will have a good idea of what your swing looks like. Are you loading your weight on to your right knee whilst maintaining the flex? Have you turned your shoulders 90 degrees whilst restricting the hip turn. Are you coiled at the top of your back swing in a powerful position a la Tiger, ready to start the dynamic downswing that is on plane and deliver a powerful strike to the ball whilst maintaining perfect balance?

With all the respect in the world ladies and gents, I'm sorry but I would guess not.

Yet way I have described the golf swing above is the almost universal opinion of what a golf swing should look like if it is going to hit the ball long and straight on a consistent basis.

What is holding me back?

One major problem stands in the way of the average golfer achieving that powerful, dynamic swing and it has nothing to do with time constraints, other commitments or funding issues. It is quite simply that the body can't physically move itself into those positions. The muscles do not have the strength nor the flexibility to support that kind of movement. However, it is not a matter of genetics as to who can or can't achieve those dynamic positions. The body can change, we are lucky enough to be able to train our bodies to grow muscle, lose fat, increase mobility, flexibility and strength and develop better balance and co-ordination. All of which will not only drastically improve your golf swing but also have positive effects on your everyday life. As my esteemed colleague Noni Croft puts it;

"The benefits of feeling healthy include being energised, positive, happy, lean and fit. More love, job and life opportunities, more energy to enjoy life and less money spent on illness".

And let's face it, those changes in our life would be massive, and far more important in the grand scheme of things than improving at our weekend hobby. But wouldn't it be nice to start hitting the ball 20 metres past your regular playing partners? What about taking 3 wood instead of driver on that tough par 4 where accuracy and placement off the tee is the key to playing the hole well? Actually using your wedges to score with rather than recover and maybe even reaching the odd Par 5 in 2?? Not to mention finishing your round without a sore back and being able to practice for more than half an hour without your muscles seizing up??
